If I had to pick out the two social issues I'm most passionate about, one would be the Asian-American movement (hence, this project), and the other would be what I call "the beauty standard." As a Japanese-American woman, I have grown up feeling subject to not only to the universal standard of beauty, but to the Asian standard of beauty, the American standard of beauty, and the Asian-American standard of beauty... all of which are completely different, and all of which I didn't feel like I fit into. The blog I am about to recommend is a platform to discuss these very issues, and I'm pretty excited about it.
TODAY'S SOCIAL MEDIA: THICK DUMPLING SKIN BLOG / TUMBLR
This dynamic duo of brilliant Asian-American women have worked together to create an incredible forum to discuss the Asian-American beauty standard, and what it can do to our psyche and to our bodies. The site promotes the vocalization of the struggles that come with this phenomenon by providing a space to share stories and to spread awareness through social media movements (ex. #IdealAsianBody). Yes, yes, and YAS.
Check out their website thickdumplingskin.com as soon as you possibly can. See what they're about, follow them on tumblr, like them on Facebook, the whole shebang. What these women are doing is so important, and I write this brimming with hope that someday, we can rid ourselves of the delusion of the "ideal body" and just admit that we are all beautiful and wonderful.
Have a great day!
