TODAY'S RECOMMENDATION: TEA WITH MILK BY ALLEN SAY
**DISCLAIMER: THIS BOOK IS A CHILDREN'S BOOK
However, its intended audience by no means dilutes the book's poetic depth in portraying the struggles of a young Japanese-American girl returning to Japan. The book is a tribute to the experiences of the author's mother, who in the end makes a place for herself through her Asian-American identity. Reading this book reminded me how important it is to expose children to experiences of cultural struggle through stories.
Globalization and technology have made the international experience an asset. More and more kids are moving (or getting moved) abroad, and go through the identity confusion and psychological stress that come with relocation. The book was published in 1999, and I still strongly related to each episode illustrated by Say.
Tea with Milk addresses understanding and taking ownership of the Asian-American identity, female empowerment, and learning to adopt other cultures. An educational and eye-opening tale in the hands of children seems like such a simple thing, but in fact, it is revolutionary, for it can change the perspectives of a generation.
The book is widely available at public libraries, online, and is even read on YouTube. If there is a child you know, share this with them! If you are a teacher, share this with your classrooms! As a present and ever-growing experience in America, the Asian-American experience deserves to be heard, and their stories must be told.
