I initially watched this movie out of my interest as a ballet dancer of 13 years, but discovered that it was a wonderful movie both for the dancing, and for the issues of transnationalism. This is a true story about a man torn, and forced to make a decision on his nationality. He is from China, where Communism limits his liberty and knowledge, but where his family resides, and where he was raised to be the man he was. But he wishes to stay in America, which after having the opportunity to live in, showed him the freedom to love, live, and dance to his greatest ability.
TODAY'S FILM: MAO'S LAST DANCER
(Directed by Bruce Beresford)
(Directed by Bruce Beresford)
As you can assume by the title, this event occurred in the era of Mao's Cultural Revolution. This was the time period from 1966 to 1976 when Mao Zedong enforced Communism in China. The film, as much other media, may not be the most accurate description of main character Li Cunxin's experience. However, it speaks to the struggles of Asian-Americans identifying with American culture, but feeling an obligation to and love for their parents and home country.
Something that is important to watch for in this film is Li Cunxin and Ben Stevenson (the person who brought Li to America, supported him through his experience, and fought for his rights until the end); the relationship they built, and their efforts to compromise between Li's desires to be free as a person/dancer, and be with his family/in touch with his culture.
Please take the time to watch this beautiful movie! I assure you it will be worth it.
Until next time,
