Hopefully you've been able to take a look at some of the comedy specials on Netflix! These comedy specials take some of the most influential comedians of our generation doing stand up in front of a huge audience. Today I'll be featuring a very special Netflix comedy special that struck so many of my Asian-American female raised in the U.S. chords ♡
Today's Film Recommendation: Ali Wong Baby Cobra
Donning her iconic giant red glasses and pregnant belly, Wong shamelessly takes a jab at sex, feminism, money, and motherhood. Amidst the laughter, she satirically channels some Asian-American stereotypes, playing particularly with racism between Asian ethnicities, which is an huge part of the Asian-American history. She has a new one called Hard Knock Wife that is coming out soon... SO EXCITED!!
If you get a chance to take a look, Netflix shines a light upon many comedians talking about the minority experience, including the legends Trevor Noah, Dave Chappelle, and Hasan Minhaj. Wherever you look though, Ali Wong's special is one of the TOP.
Something to be aware about is that two comedic greats, Mo'Nique and Wanda Sykes, have recently called out Netflix for allegedly offering them less money for standup specials than fellow female comedian Amy Schumer, and male comedians of color. See the Times article here.
P.S. Did you all catch Kelly Marie Tran (from Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Mirai Nagasu (Olympic Figure Skater) at the Oscars last weekend?! They both looked gorgeous, and they were both wearing blue, but... definitely not the same person. Apparently, Getty Images thought they were, and Asian-American activists on the internet are a little concerned. See The Huffington Post Article here.
Have a lovely week, everyone.
Best,
