In her study of Transnational Fillipino Families, Yen Le Espiritu (a famous scholar of ethnic and Asian-American studies at UCSD) talks about what I call Long-Distance Families, meaning families who have one or more family members living in a different country in order to provide for their families. This is a common phenomenon among Asian Americans. Since many of us have parents whose first language is not English, many jobs they get in America include a lot of traveling to their home country, or staying there permanently while the families themselves live in America. In the opposite case, some people come from Asia by themselves to send money back home to their families. Check out my video on the topic:
I would love to hear from different perspectives (from other Asian Americans, or other groups this situation applies to)! Please comment, respond with a video via YouTube, or email me at [email protected]. :)
