One of the many trademark symbols of Japanese culture is the "otaku," a term referring to those who are obsessed with manga, games, and/or anime. The otaku culture is a subculture within Japan; the Akihabara district in Tokyo is designated to cater to the interests of otaku, with maid cafes (cafes in which all of the waitresses are dressed in maid costumes or cosplay of anime characters), video game stores, and places that sell figurines and manga. Of course, otakus are not only present in Japan, but all over the world. This is why the drama I am going to recommend to you today touched the hearts of many internationally, as well as in Japan.
TODAY'S DRAMA: 電車男 DENSHA OTOKO "TRAIN MAN"
I am not one to outwardly show a lot of emotion, but I cry so hard every time I watch this one! The drama is based off of a true story, and was originally a book that was produced into a drama, then a film. It is about an otaku who falls in love with a beautiful woman. Unable to act upon these feelings himself (being too shy, and doubting a woman like her would ever love someone like himself), he goes online to a "doku-otoko" chat room (lit. poison man, but referring to men who are "forever alone") to ask for advice. Thanks to this advice, he is able to approach the woman, and eventually starts to date her.
This drama discusses both otaku/dokuotoko culture, and 21st century online culture. The story is really very beautiful-- while I recommend it for its educational value, I've never seen a love story so adorable and pure. ♥
The film and the special are, in my opinion, not particularly well done, but the drama is definitely a 5-star. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
